We are delighted to share highlights from an event on March 10, 2018, at Magen David Sephardic Synagogue in Rockville, MD. The Sephardic Congregation in cooperation with Cape Verde Jewish Heritage Project, Inc, hosted an evening highlighting the Moroccan Jews of Cabo Verde. CVJHP is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to honoring and preserving the memory of the many Sephardic Jews who immigrated to Cabo Verde from Morocco and Gibraltar in the 19th century, by restoring and preserving their cemeteries, documenting their legacy through publications and videos, and creating a museum.

Ambassador Carlos Wahnon Veiga, Cabo Verdean Ambassador to the U.S. and Israel spoke at the event, Carol Castiel, president of CVJHP made a slide presentation and Gardenia Benros, renowned Cabo Verdean singer of Moroccan Jewish descent, wowed the crowd by singing in Crioulo and Ladino.

Please visit our web page via the link below to savor some highlights from the evening.
you that the government of Cabo Verde on June 29th 2017 classified the Jewish
cemeteries and other places of Jewish memory as “National Historical Patrimony.”
This is a major milestone and an action that CVJHP has been advocating for many
years. So, we are delighted that the central government has taken this important
step. This legal status will ensure that the vestiges of your ancestors’
heritage such as the Jewish cemeteries, residences, commercial buildings and other
places of memory will be legally protected and maintained. It also signals to
the world that Cabo Verde values the contributions made by the many Moroccan
and Gibraltarian Jews, who immigrated to Cape Verde in the 19th
century, to Cape Verdean history and culture. This classification at the
national level will also place Cabo Verde on the map of the global Jewish
Diaspora. CVJHP will continue to work hand-in-hand with the government based on
our memorandum of understanding (Protocolo) signed in September 2016, to identify,
restore, preserve and maintain these important monuments to Jewish heritage.

localité de Ponta do Sol elle-même.

Thanks to financial assistance provided by the Cape Verde Jewish
Heritage Project Inc. and the US Embassy in Praia, during the past year, a
dedicated staff at the The National Archives of Cape Verde (ANCV), accelerated
the organization and classification of documents pertaining to the islands of
Boa Vista and Santo Antão, where the Jewish community was most pronounced. So CVJHP historian Ângela Sofia Benoliel Coutinho was finally able to access valuable documentation pertaining to the presence of
the Moroccan and Gibraltarian Jews, heretofore unavailable to researchers.

CVJHP Historian

The NationalArchives of Cape Verde (ANCV), founded in 1988, is the repository of documentation
from all of the towns and islands in Cape Verde. Given financial constraints, the ANCV had not previously been able to organize and classify the
documents pertaining to these two islands. On her return trip to ANCV headquarters in Praia in July and August, Ângela was
able to consult the rich, original documentation pertaining to the Jewish
merchants in these two islands. The legal proceedings in the Court of Ribeira
Grande in Santo Antão yielded the most valuable information. Ângela identified approximately 154 cases showing that the Jewish community comprised about 50
individuals in the second half of the 19th century. An analysis of
this original documentation is likely to shed light on the nature and extent of
the Jewish community’s commercial activities and the impact they had on the economy
of the archipelago. It will also indicate the commercial relationships they
forged among each other and with Cape Verdeans or Portuguese Catholics, as well
as with colonial authorities.

Ribeira Grande, Santo Antão

The
documentation may also provide clues about the family, social and cultural life
of the members of this community and their linkages with Jewish merchants from Morocco and Gibraltar in other Portuguese territories such as Lisbon,
the Algarve, the Azores, Angola, Mozambique, São Tome e Principe and Brazil.

It’s not surprising that this community of Jewish merchants was drawn to monoculture
for export given that Cape Verde was an agricultural island with few inhabitants who had limited purchasing power. For example, in the island of Santo Antão, the most profitable export was coffee, the price of which rose in the international market during the
second half of the 19th century. Documents suggest that the
merchants engaged in business with Jewish coffee exporters in other
agricultural islands such as Santiago, Fogo, and São Nicolau, and
with those who lived in São Vicente,
Santiago, and Brava, islands that had international ports to facilitate exports. Since many of these Cape Verdean-based traders
traveled to Lisbon approximately once a year, it is probable that a commercial network existed among Moroccan and Gibraltarian Jews in all
of the Portuguese speaking African territories and in the Atlantic. It is something to explore as Ângela traces the outlines of a forthcoming book about the Jewish presence in Cape Verde.
As you know from previous posts, she has been working in the archives in Portugal and Cape Verde, but in mid-2015, CVJHP sent her to Morocco and Gibraltar, the birthplaces of many of the original immigrants, to pursue research in archives and libraries, as well as to meet with academics and archivists. I accompanied her on both trips to facilitate contacts and expedite our work, which, oxala, will culminate in a book in the not-too-distant future. Here, in Portuguese, are her personal reflections:
The Jewish cemeteries in Penha de França and Ponta do Sol have been officially classified as Municipal Cultural Patrimony or "Património Cultural Municipal" by the Camara Municipal de Ribeira Grande (CMRG) -- City Hall in Ribeira Grande, island of Santo Antao.
Engineer Orlando Delgado, President (Mayor) of CMRG, told me in late July 2015, when I was in Ribeira Grande on a site visit to evaluate the status of restoration of the two cemeteries, that he would press for this designation. CVJHP Inc. salutes the CMRG for fulfilling its commitment.
The Jewish cemeteries are in the process of being restored and preserved with financing and advice from CVJHP Inc. and by a capable technical team from the CMRG. Their recent designation as "municipal cultural patrimony" is an important first step toward their eventual designation as cultural patrimony by the central government. Why is this so critical? It means that the people of Ribeira Grande value and honor the contributions and legacy of the many Sephardic Jews who once lived and prospered on the island. The designation legally protects the cemeteries from attempts by developers, the state or individuals to destroy, alter or deface the cemeteries. Most of all, it reflects the view by the CMRG and the citizens therein that the cemeteries are an inextricable part of their history and identity, even if no practicing Jews remain on the island today. Thanks to the CMRG, the memory of the many Jewish families: The Benros,
the Brigham, the Cohens, the Pinto, the Wahnon and many more .... will
live on through the poignant cemeteries and the many descendants in Cape
Verde and abroad. It will also help to promote cultural tourism in the
island of Santo
Antao. CVJHP Inc. fervently hopes that the other municipalities with
Jewish cemeteries, namely Praia and Boa Vista, will emulate the measure
taken by CMRG and vote to designate their respective cemeteries as "património cultural
municipal." Such a move will greatly benefit the economic and cultural development of the entire country.

We apologize for the gap in communication, but CVJHP has been on the move since we last connected and in the next posts I will catch you up with our activities regarding cemetery restoration and research. For now, we'd like to share the article below, which appeared in the newspaper Panorama in Gibraltar after CVJHP historian Ângela Sofia Benoliel Coutinho and I traveled there in June 2015 on a research visit. John Culatto interviewed us and wrote the following:
Daniel Abraham, CVJHP is promoting and underwriting archival research into the Sephardim who immigrated to Cabo Verde from Morocco and Gibraltar in the 19th century.
However, we also want to pay tribute to Claudia Correia, whose book, "Presença de Judeus em Cabo Verde: Inventariação na Documentação do Arquivo Histórico Nacional (1840 - 1927), published in 1998, is an indispensable source of data and information for this research. We are very grateful to Dr. Correia for conducting and publishing her pioneering study --- one of the first archivists / historians to begin documenting the presence and legacy of the Sephardim in Cabo Verde.

CVJHP recently engaged historian Angela Sofia Benoliel Coutinho, a descendant of the legendary Benoliel family, to build upon the work of Claudia Correia and others, by conducting archival research in Portugal, Cape Verde, London, Gibraltar and Morocco, to help us gain an even better and clearer understanding of the commercial,
social, political and religious activities of the Jews, their relationships with one another and their role within the larger Catholic
community, particularly in the islands of Santo Antao, Sao Vicente, Boa
Vista and Sao Tiago, where the majority of Jews settled. Dra. Angela Sofia Benoliel Coutinho intends to expand and deepen our understanding of the contributions
of the Jews and their descendants in Cabo Verde by building upon Dra. Correia's foundational study. To summarize the latest, CVJHP in conjunction with Praia City Hall or Camara da Praia, held a re-dedication ceremony, replete with many descendants and international dignitaries, of the recently restored Jewish burial plot in Praia in May 2013. CVJHP financed the work, which was executed by Praia City Hall. Please see the numerous articles written about this event on our publications page. CVJHP is proud of the generous support provided by His Majesty King Mohammed VI of Morocco, which enables CVJHP to underwrite physical restoration efforts of Jewish cemeteries throughout the archipelago, namely in Praia and in the islands of Boa Vista and Santo Antão. In Santo Antão there are two cemeteries - Ponta do Sol and Penha de França - in the vila of Ribeira Grande. Below are two photos from the May 2013 planning visit to Santo Antão.
Physical restoration of these two cemeteries should commence over the coming months. Meantime, thanks to generous start-up support from World Monuments Fund CVJHP
has engaged historian Ângela Sofia Benoliel Coutinho, a native of Cape Verde and
a descendant of the legendary Benoliel family of Boa Vista, to scour relevant
archives in Lisbon and Cape Verde, as well as to interview descendants and
others, to obtain a fuller understanding and detailed portrait of the Sephardic
Jews of Cape Verde. Finishing touches are being made to the cemetery in Boa Vista, after which CVJHP will work with Boa Vista City Hall and other stakeholders as well as the Ministry of Culture to create signage and documentation for the many tourists expected to visit the site. In Praia, CVJHP is also negotiating with Praia City Hall to improve the walkway, lighting and signage leading to the restored Jewish burial plot, which will not only enhance the site as a historical monument but also as a potential tourist attraction.
During restoration work on the Jewish burial plot within Varzea, the contractors for Camara da Praia uncovered the tombstone of young Jacob Azencot! It was an extraordinary and moving discovery. Jacob Azencot's grave was uncovered beside that of Benjamin Alves. This brings the total number of graves in the Varzea cemetery to 10. In a subsequent post, I will list the names but for now, we are seeking descendants or anyone who knows if Mr. Abraham Tarregano and Miriam Tarregano, who are both buried in Praia, have any living descendants. In addition, we are seeking to find out if Mr. El Baz, also buried in the newly restored Jewish plot in Praia, has any descendants in Cape Verde or abroad. We also seek information about any descendants of Mr. Samuel Serruya, whose tombstone is among the most majestic in the cemetery. Please send any information you may have regarding these three families / individuals as well as Jacob Azencot. In addition to restoration work, we are simultaneously planning to document the history and contributions of the Jewish families to Cape Verde. Meantime thank you to the team working for the Camara da Praia who uncovered the precious tombstone of Jacob Azencot. Parabens! On May 2, 2013, Cape Verde Jewish Heritage Project is organizing a ceremony in Praia to re-consecrate the Jewish burial plot inside the Varzea Cemetary, which was recently restored under an agreement between CVJHP and the Municipality of Praia (Camara da Praia). It is the first of four small Jewish cemeteries that CVJHP will rehabilitate and preserve in Cape Verde in partnership with local and central government authorities. CVJHP financed the restoration, which was designed and executed by the "Camara da Praia." CVJHP is also grateful to central government authorities, in particular Prime Minister Jose Maria Neves and Minister of Culture, Mario Lucio, for their cooperation and support. Distinguished dignitaries from Morocco and Gibraltar (the birthplace of most of the Jews who immigrated to Cape Verde in the 19th century) are expected to attend, as is the chief Rabbi of Lisbon. We also look forward to having many descendants from the United States and Europe join in the commemoration. It is not too late to sign up for the trip! Please contact us at: info@capeverdejewishheritage.org by March 29 if you wish to participate. Note: Each person is responsible for covering his/her trip expenses including air fare, hotel and most meals. However, we have identified a travel agent in Cape Verde who is working to obtain the best air fares and hotel rates for our group. It's an opportunity to appreciate the poignant remnants of the Sephardic Jewish presence in Cape Verde and to mingle with local descendants of the Auday, Benros, Benoliel, Benchimol, Brighham, Cohen, Levy, Wahnon and other Jewish families, meet Cape Verdean local and central government officials as well as Embassy representatives. Meetings, receptions and other excursions will be planned. Enjoy Cape Verdean "Morabeza" or hospitality. Visit our website: CVJHP. We
have made considerable progress on the fundraising front that will
enable us to begin restoration of several cemeteries very soon. The most
thrilling and gratifying development is the fact the H.M. King Mohammed
VI of Morocco is now a major benefactor of the Project. He appreciates
the inextricable link between the legacy of the Jews of Cape Verde and
the Jews of Morocco since almost all Cape Verde's Jews hailed originally
from the Moroccan cities of Tangier, Tetouan, Rabat and Mogador
(Essaouira). Moreover, the Government of Cape Verde is moving in the
direction of classifying the Jewish cemeteries as national historical
patrimony, which would go a long way toward ensuring their preservation.
On a recent trip to Cape Verde to accelerate restoration efforts and to
consolidate cooperation among the descendants of Cape Verde's Jews,
Sofia Veiga (descendant of the Wahnon family) and I paid a courtesy call
on Cape Verdean President Jorge Fonseca, who is very supportive of the
project. I also met with Minister of Culture, Mario Lucio, who also
backs CVJHP efforts and who is spearheading the drive to classify the
cemeteries and other places of Jewish memory as national historical
patrimony.

Congressman Barney Frank of Massachusetts whose district boasts numerous constituents of Cape Verdean and Portuguese descent, was the guest of honor at a successful fundraising dinner for CVJHP at the residence of Portuguese Ambassador Joao de Vallera, a valued honorary board member. Frank spoke eloquently about the need to preserve the Jewish heritage of Cape Verde and said that the Project's work to restore and preserve the cemeteries and to document the legacy of the Jews was an important symbol of not just "tolerance," by Cape Verde toward the Jews, but of "enthusiastic embrace" of each other. http://www.jpost.com/LandedPages/PrintArticle.aspx?id=198194. About 75 people attended the dinner which featured Portuguese and Moroccan cuisine, Portuguese wine, and Cape Verdean Music. Cape Verdean Ambassador to the U.S. Fatima Veiga spoke about the government's commitment to the Project and their pride in having many citizens of Sephardic Jewish descent. Mayor of New Bedford, MA, Scott Lang, attended as did many members of the Sephardic community of Greater Washington. CVJHP Board members Jack Edlow, Allan Reich and Ambassador Hank Cohen lent their generous financial support.
A Portuguese national of Moroccan descent, Assor provided much-valued advice regarding the repair and preservation of the Jewish burial plots in accordance with Jewish law and made a presentation about the sacredness of Jewish burial grounds and the tolerant temperament of Morocco --- the origin of most of Cape Verde's Jews.

In two official ceremonies replete with local television, radio and newspaper coverage, I signed agreements on behalf of CVJHP with the Municipalities of Praia and Boa Vista where two of the country's four major Jewish cemeteries are located. It was after the signing ceremony in the capital, Praia, that Cantor Assor chanted and made a moving presentation to dozens of interested citizens--Jewish and non-Jewish alike--and took questions. In fact, one of the guests was a Muslim businessman from Morocco who recently moved to Cape Verde. He was intrigued by the fact that most of the Jews who settled in Cape Verde in the 19th century and who are buried there, hailed from his home country. He intends to spread the word about our efforts to honor Moroccan patrimony in Catholic Cape Verde. The businessman is an important link to Moroccan Jews in Israel who may be interested in doing business in Cape Verde.

What else did we accomplish besides the formal partnerships with Praia and Boa Vista?

1. RESTORATION ADVICE. Cantor Assor made practical and concrete recommendations regarding cemetery restoration efforts in accordance with Jewish law (halacha), which we communicated to our technical counterparts in the Municipalities.

2. GROWING LINKAGES WITH DESCENDANTS. We are attracting and mobilizing more desdendants among the Anahory, Benchimol, Benros, Benoliel, Brigham, Cohen, Levy, Pinto and Wahnon families to become more involved in actively supporting our collective efforts at restoring the cemeteries and documenting the presence of their Jewish forebears. VISIT TO SAO VICENTE AND SANTO ANTAO. The island of Santo Antao (the Jewish capital of the archipelago) boasts two cemeteries; both are located in the Municipality of Ribeira Grande. Thanks to this Municipality's initiative on my first visit in 2008, CVJHP and Ribeira Grande had already signed a partnership agreement. We are in the process of reviewing the restoration needs of the cemeteries in Penha de Franca and Ponta do Sol. While in Santo Antao, I went to the village of Cocoli, where Sulamita Pinto, grand-daughter of businessman Isaac Pinto, lives. She welcomed me with typical Cape Verdean morabeza and regaled me with stories about her well-known grandfather. In Santo Antao, I stayed one night at the beautiful hotel/resort called Pedracin.

4. UNICV - RESEARCH. On behalf of CVJHP, we are seeking a well-established historian who can undertake archival as well as oral research on the Jewish families who immigrated to Cape Verde. In conjunction with the University of Cape Verde (UNICV), we hope to identify a qualified candidate very soon.

5. PORTUGUESE AND AMERICAN EMBASSY EMISSARIES. I spoke briefly with the outgoing American Ambassador to Cape Verde, Marianne Myles, who has always shown strong support for the Cape Verde Jewish Heritage Project. We will follow-up with the new ambassador and other diplomats at the Embassy. Portuguese Ambassador Graca Guimaraes also demonstrated solidarity with the Project. I met with her briefly just before my departure to Boston.

As a result of this vital visit, CVJHP is moving closer to its main goals of establishing partnerships with Cape Verdean authorities and descendants to restore and preserve Cape Verde's Jewish burial grounds and to document the Jewish legacy. We will sign a memorandum of understanding between Cape Verde Jewish Heritage Project, Inc. and the municipalities of Praia and Boa Vista. (We already have an agreement with Ribeira Grande in Santo Antao). These agreements with the local governments (mayors), who are responsible for the maintenance of the cemeteries, will complete the groundwork to enable us to move forward with more vigor to raise funds to repair, restore and preserve the beautiful small Sephardic burial plots that dot the archipelago.

In Praia, there is a Jewish section in the Varzea cemetery which needs urgent repair, protection and beautification. Many of the tombstones are literally sinking. Cantor Assor in his capacity as religious advisor for the Project, will advise us on how to best repair and restore the stones in accordance with Jewish law (halacha.)

We will participate in a formal signing ceremony with the Mayor of Praia, Mr. Ulisses Correia, after which Cantor Assor will make a presentation in his native Portuguese about the significance of burial grounds in Jewish tradition among other topics relevant to Sephardic Jewish customs and rituals. All Jewish descendants are invited as are other interested Cape Verdeans, government officials and foreign ambassadors, to attend the ceremony.

While in the capital, Praia, we hope to advance our objective of persuading the central government to designate the Jewish cemeteries as "cultural monuments," so they will receive special care and enable us to raise funds more efficiently and effectively. For that, we hope to meet with the Minister of Culture. In the island of Boa Vista we plan to sign a memorandum of understanding with Municipality President Jose Pinto Almeida. This would confer greater status on and protection for the dilapidated Benoliel cemetery. Rafael Benoliel, architect in Lisbon, creator of the CVJHP logo, and distinguished descendant of the Benoliel family, has designed a blueprint to preserve and protect the small family cemetery and it environs. Next task ---raise sufficient funds to get the job done. We'll let you know how the trip goes, so stay tuned....Carol Castielhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16106990487954099454noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13810932481090297.post-38409726896092981302010-05-15T00:32:00.000-07:002010-08-08T15:27:35.559-07:00A CAPE VERDEAN DESCENDANT'S JEWISH WEDDINGIn 2010, we continued with the crucial behind the scenes work which we hope will pave the way for successful fund raising. We estimate the need for roughly US$200,000 to cover the costs of cemetery restoration and preservation, research and publications and promotion of cultural and religous tourism, with attendant pamphlets and training.

In May 2010, I made a slide presentation on the Jews of Cape Verde to the World Jewry Committee of Har Shalom Synagogue in Potomoc, Maryland. We hope to do many more of these types of presentations in the future to raise awareness about the Jewish legacy in Cape Verde and promote travel to the islands by Jews.

I also met with the President of the American Sephardi Federation of New York to build bridges of cooperation. We will be cross promoting each others' web sites among other cooperative activities in the near future regarding Portuguese and Moroccan Jewry. And I also had the pleasure of meeting Raquel Andrade Benoliel de Carvalho ---- a young descendant of the famous Benoliel de Carvalho family. Raquel is converting to Judaism and marrying a Jewish American fellow. There are many more stories about the younger generation of Cape Verdeans who are "returning" to their Jewish roots. Many have converted independently. That warrants a separate post!

Carol Castielhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16106990487954099454noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13810932481090297.post-74379574443777049442009-12-15T23:52:00.000-08:002010-06-08T09:23:28.482-07:00PORTUGAL TRIPIn September 2009, I traveled to Portugal on behalf of CVJHP to raise awareness among the Lisbon Jewish community and the descendants of the Jews of Cape Verde, many of whom reside in Lisbon. I met with members of the Benros, Benoliel, Cohen, Wahnon, Seruya and other families at a meeting organized by Mr. Pedro Benros and Viriato de Barros. I also had the pleasure of meeting the President of the Lisbon Jewish community, Mr. Jose Bensaude Carp, a cousin of former Portuguese President Jorge Sampaio. Distinguished businessman and historian, Roberto Bachmann also attended as did the vice president of the Jewish community, Esther Mucznik, and Cantor of the Lisbon Synagogue, Isaac Assor.

I also visited the Jewish cemetery in Faro, Algarve. This Jewish cemetery is an inspiration to me as it was restored in the same way we hope to restore and preserve the small burial plots in Cape Verde. Thanks to Isaac "Ike" Bitton, a Portuguese - born Jew of Moroccan descent, who lived in Illinois, the Faro Jewish cemetery has been registered as a Portuguese National Monument!!! We are trying to do something similar in Cape Verde! Unfortunately Ike passed away a few year ago, but not before he shared his passion and advice with me. Moroccan-born Sephardim "returned" to the Algarve at the behest of Marques de Pombal in the late 1700's. He reportedly told them that they would be "safe," even though many came before the Inquisition had officially been abolished. Marques de Pombal said Portugal needed the expertise of their former Jewish inhabitants, many of whom fled to Morocco at the time of the Inquisition. Although the Faro cemetery has many more graves than all four Cape Verdean Jewish cemeteries combined, it stands as a physical and spiritual inspiration for our work in Cape Verde. To Ike Bitton, a gregarious, proud Portuguese Jew --- May you rest in peace knowing that you are spurring us to replicate your good work in Cape Verde. Thanks to Ralf and Judy Pinto who manage the cemetery for their kind hospitality.

In Lisbon, I also met with senior officials at the Gulbenkian and Luso-American Foundations. Objective ---obtain funding and / or support for research into the families of the Jews of Cape Verde. We need to field researchers who can comb archives in Portugal, Morocco and Cape Verde to obtain more information about the commercial and professional activities of the Jewish families, many of whom contributed greatly to Cape Verdean development. We know that David Benoliel literally fueled the economy of Boa Vista in the early 1900's. We need to know more based on archival and oral history. Gulbenkian has an international fellowship program to which we plan to field a scholar next year (2011). And, I asked Cantor Isaac Assor, Portuguese Jew of Moroccan descent (whose lilting Hebrew chanting is divine) to be CVJHP religious advisor. His background as a scholar of Hebrew and Sephardic culture will help us decipher the meanings of the Hebrew and Portuguese etchings on the tombstones in Cape Verde.

In November 2009, I made a slide presentation on the Jews of Cape Verde for the Washington DC's Jewish Study Center. Joining me was John Wahnon, former President of AMICAEL, distinguished descendant of the grand Wahnon family. John is researching and documenting his family and provides invaluable support to me and CVJHP in general. John and I have become a veritable duo -- talking to groups about the Jews of Cape Verde and the need to honor their memory by preserving their burial grounds and documenting their legacy.Carol Castielhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16106990487954099454noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13810932481090297.post-23847810796497079292009-09-18T23:34:00.000-07:002010-06-08T00:57:28.603-07:00REVIEW AND PROGRESS UPDATE FOR CVJHPFollowing the successful reception at the Moroccan Ambassador's residence in March 2009, CVJHP accomplished quite a bit behind the scenes. B'nai B'rith International, whose executive vice president, Daniel Mariaschin, is on CVJHP's honorary board, sent veteran journalist Larry Luxner to Cape Verde in June 2009 to investigate and write about the islands' Jewish heritage. Thanks once again to TACV - The Cape Verde National Airline - for sponsoring the transatlantic flight and providing discounts on the inter-island legs for Larry. See Larry's fabulous article entitled "Rediscovering the Jewish Heritage of Cape Verde," in the December 2009 issue of B'nai B'rith Monthly on our web site: http://www.capeverdejewishheritage.org/. Speaking of the web site, it is being re-designed and upgraded by Paul Wind and Lauren Newman, CVJHP newest volunteers. We hope it will be up and running by July 2010. It will be more attractive, user-friendly, and interactive. We want to reach out to descendants of the Jews of Cape Verde around the world and have them post memories or connect with one another. In August, I submitted a letter to the Cape Verdean Minister of Culture to request that all the Jewish cemeteries and other distinct places of memory be designated as "Cultural Monuments." We believe that this designation would not only go a long way in preserving the Jewish burial grounds and other buildings constructed or owned by the Jewish families, but would also help us to raise funds from foundations. By recognizing the cemeteries as "cultural monuments," the government of Cape Verde also acknowledges their unique historical and cultural value. Foundations and individuals are more inclined to donate to a Project when they see stakeholders, such as the government of Cape Verde, taking concrete supportive actions such as this.Carol Castielhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16106990487954099454noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13810932481090297.post-50008765010870827052009-04-01T11:30:00.000-07:002010-06-06T11:55:29.414-07:00MOROCCAN KICKOFF RECEPTION FOR CVJHPIn March 2009, the Moroccan Ambassador to the United States, H.E. Aziz Mekouar hosted a reception to honor the Moroccan roots of Cape Verde's Jewish presence. More than 100 people attended. B'nai B'rith International Vice President Daniel Mariaschin, who is on the CVJHP honorary board, participated. Cape Verdean Ambassador to the U.S. Fatima Veiga and Portuguese Ambasssador Joao de Vallera were also present. Jacinto and Carmen Benros, descendants of the Jewish Benros family that hails from Tangier, drove from Providence, RI to celebrate CVJHP which honors their ancestors. We received ample press coverage from the Jewish Telegraph Agency, The Forward, Washington Jewish Week and the Diplomat On-Line. We raised some needed funds and hope to garner more in the weeks and months ahead from special friends of the Cape Verde Jewish Heritage Project.Carol Castielhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16106990487954099454noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13810932481090297.post-21479312238980729722009-01-20T18:07:00.000-08:002010-06-07T23:11:57.247-07:00VISITS TO CAPE VERDEAN COMMUNITIES AND CAPE VERDELast year, I made trips to New York City, Providence, Rhode Island; Boston, Massachusetts and Los Angeles to meet with Cape Verdean - American and Jewish communities and inform them about the goals of CVJHP. During that trip, I also established relationships between CVJHP and the mayors of the islands where the cemeteries are located. They pledged strong cooperation and support. Prime Minister Jose Neves, Minister of Culture Emanuel Veiga and Minister of Foreign Affairs Jose Brito as well as other officials, reiterated their commitment to the Project.Carol Castielhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16106990487954099454noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13810932481090297.post-37985725020035316972009-01-20T17:53:00.000-08:002010-06-07T23:40:23.933-07:00TRIBUTE TO DONORSMuch progress was made in 2008 to move the Project foward in the US and Cape Verde. We built a strong board and advisory board. We also had some success in fundraising. I traveled to New York City, Providence, RI; Boston, MA and Los Angeles to inform and sensitize Cape Verdean American and Jewish communities about CVJHP goals. In the process, we also managed to identify and contact potential funders and sponsors. Thanks to the Stanley and Marion Bergman Family Charitable Fund for their generous contribution which made possible my visit to Cape Verde earlier this month. I traveled to Sao Tiago, Sao Vicente, Santo Antao and Boavista to evaluate the state of the dilapidated Jewish cemeteries and meet and establish partnerships with local officials and descendants of the Jewish families. A big thank you also to TACV -- Cape Verde National Airline for providing transatlantic air fare and a discount on inter-island flights. Needless to say, we are grateful for the generous support and advice from our board members: Allan Reich, Jack Edlow and Ambassador Herman Cohen, all of whom have provided invaluable financial and in-kind support to our effort to honor the Jews of Cape Verde and their descendants.Carol Castielhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16106990487954099454noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13810932481090297.post-22362617696947596122008-02-24T18:53:00.000-08:002010-06-06T11:56:57.141-07:00CVJHP IS ON THE MOVEThanks to Cape Verdean Jewish descendants in Lisbon, we now have a beautiful logo for the Cape Verde Jewish Heritage Project, Inc. It is the creation of Rafael Benoliel. We are finishing the web site (which will hopefully be ready by mid-May) creating a promotional brochure, and finalizing the board of directors and advisory board. These tools are critical for the integrity of the organziation and for the all-important fund raising phase which will help to underwrite interviews with the descendants of Cape Verde's Jews (many of whom are elderly), to restore and preserve the small cemeteries that dot the archipelago, and to promote Jewish heritage tourism in Cape Verde. We have strong endorsement from the government of Cape Verde for this integrated effort.

By the way, if you have not yet read the series of excellent articles about Cape Verde that appeared in the Financial Times in November 2007, I highly commend them. You will glean insights about Cape Verde's growing economy, stable democratic government, development priorities (tourism), and it's special partnership with the European Union. Cape Verde is becoming an enticing tourist destination, especially for Europeans. Interestingly, there is a direct flight from London to the island of Boa Vista! Many UK residents are rediscovering and building second homes on the islands. I say "rediscovering" because in the 19th century, the British helped to construct the port in the island of Sao Vicente. At the time, Cape Verde was a Portuguese colony. Unlike their European rivals Spain and France, Britain and Portugal have always had good, peaceful relations throughout history. Because of their longstanding alliance, the two countries never fought a war. So, it is not surprising that the British are once again back in Cape Verde. This time though, they are dealing with Cape Verde as a sovereign, independent country.Carol Castielhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16106990487954099454noreply@blogger.com3
